WARNING SPOILERS CONTAINED IN ARTICLE.

Say it isn’t so! They can’t have killed off Brian! However, that is exactly what US viewers saw last night when they tuned into the latest Family Guy episode.

The family’s beloved talking dog – voiced by creator Seth MacFarlane – had an unfortunate run in with a car and was killed in last night’s “Life of Brian” episode.

Stewie Griffin, Brian’s best friend and often co-conspirator over the eleven seasons, could have saved Brian through the use of his time machine. Unfortunately, he dismantled the contraption earlier in the episode and no replacement parts were found. This left the Griffin’s to say goodbye to Brian before deciding to buy the “rough around the edges” pup, Vinny (voiced by former Sopranos actor Tony Sirico).

The shock death came about as a “fun way to shake things up”, according to executive producer Steve Callaghan in speaking with E! Online. “We got very excited about the way this change will affect the family dynamics and the characters,” he continued.

When questioned on why it was Brian that was killed off, Callaghan replied, “It seemed more in the realm of a reality that a dog would get hit by a car, than if one of the kids died. As much as we love Brian, and as much as everyone loves their pets, we felt it would be more traumatic to lose one of the kids, rather than the family pet.”

However, it was not only the fans that were left stunned by the latest episode, stars Mila Kunis and Seth Green’s first reaction was that they “were glad it wasn’t them”. Though Callaghan thinks they were “surprised… pretty stunned… They were as shocked as anyone.”

While springing a death of a major character on fans like this can sometimes result in a fan backlash, Callaghan wasn’t too concerned with receiving this reaction from Family Guy fans. “Our fans are smart enough and have been loyal to our show for long enough, to know that they can trust us,” Callaghan added.

And the all important question – how will the new pup impact on Stewie? “Vinny is a really good match for Stewie. Where Brian was sort of a match for Stewie intellectually, Vinny is a good match for Stewie because he doesn’t let Stewie get away with any crap. He’ll call Stewie out on his B.S. freely”.

Sounds like there will be some interesting dynamics there. Family Guy returns to Fox with a brand new episode on December 8.
