Family Guy fans are pretty shaken up after Brian’s death on the latest episode.

Brian, the smart, witty family dog, was hit by a truck while preparing to play in the street with Stewie and died. This obviously didn’t please the fans at all!

A petition to bring the beloved family dog back was launched yesterday on Change.org. So far, the petition has gotten 63,778 signatures out of a 75,000 goal.

“Brian Griffin was an important part of our viewing experience. He added a witty and sophisticated element to the show. Family Guy and Fox Broadcasting will lose viewers if Brian Griffin is not brought back to the show” Aaron Thompson, starter of the petition, wrote.

Executive producer Steve Callaghan spoke to E! News about Brian’s death:

“This was an idea that got pitched in the writers room and it sort of caught fire, and we thought it could be a fun way to shake things up.

As soon as this idea came up, we started talking about what the next couple episodes could be and we got very excited about the way this change will affect the family dynamics and the characters”.

But the question remains: why Brian?

“It seemed more in the realm of reality that a dog would get hit by a car, that if one of the kids died. As much as we love Brian, and as much as everyone loves their pets, we felt it would be more traumatic to lose one of the kids, rather than the family pet”.

Don’t worry, the Griffins have a new dog already: Vinny, voiced by The Soprano‘s Tony Sirico.

Don’t miss Family Guy every Sunday at 10pm on FOX.
