Another day, another award show. The CMT Music Awards aired Wednesday night and was packed with star-studded performances, fashion ranging from the fantastic to the ridiculous, a tribute to the victims of Oklahoma, and technical difficulties. Today, I am going to focus on the fashion. From Carrie Underwood’s bright green hot shorts, to Ed Sheeran’s just-rolled-out-of-bed look, we will cover them all. Ready? Set…
Let’s start with Carrie Underwood. Underwood decided to opt out of the typical designer gown and instead went with this bold aqua Georges Chakra short suit from his Edition collection. While there is no denying that Underwood certainly has the stems to pull this look off, I’m not sure how I feel about the ensemble as a whole, though the color certainly looks beautiful on her. What do you think, so hot, or so not?
I am no fan of Taylor Swift. I think she is over-exposed, over-rated, and pretty much just annoying all the time. However, I have to admit that she usually looks impeccable. That was not the case on Wednesday. I do not like this new trend of the short front/long back hem. To me, it just makes the piece look unfinished and sloppy. The color washes her out and her shoes are much too clunky for this delicate dress. I also think her bangs are too heavy for her face and overshadow her eyes and feminine features. All in all, I give her two thumbs down.
Kristin Bell, who co-hosted the show, stepped out in a sexy black Zuhair Murad leather LBD. The dress has killer laser cut outs around the neckline and intricate embroidery on the skirt. Kristin, who gave birth to a baby girl in March, attributes her lovely glow and voluptuous figure to the residual hormones of pregnancy. I think she looks fab!
Nicole Kidman is a fashion icon, period. She is not afraid to take risks, and they usually pay off. But, let’s be honest, it’s not hard to be fabulous when you look like Nicole Kidman. Kidman decided to let her hunky husband shine on his night and kept it simple with this chic LBD and sexy white pumps. She could probably wear a potato sack and still look great if she showcased those legs!
Sheryl Crow looks amazing for a 51-year-old woman. However, the Grecian style gown that she donned last night just looked, well, bad. The cutouts were strange and made the gown look awkward. It simply did not fit her properly. The hemline that hit right above the ankles gave us a clear view of her bronze, chunky wedge sandals that really sealed the deal on an already questionable get-up. While her hair and makeup looked beautiful, her tacky jewelry was really the cherry on top of a disappointing cake. For shame, Sheryl!
I wonder if Kellie Pickler decided to smuggle out one of her Dancing with the Stars costumes after her big win. While the fit of the dress looks fantastic on her svelte frame, the sparkle is a little much. Though, I suppose if you’re going to go with sparkle and shine, this is the event to do it. The country music world seems to take the “go big or go home” mantra to heart. The color looks great against her bronze skin and the cut of the dress is beautiful; I guess I’m just more of a “less is more” kind of gal. What do you think; so hot, or so not?
I, personally, am not familiar with any music by The Band Perry. However, I am now all-too-aware of the smoking hot sister in this sibling trio, Kimberly Perry. Perry wows on the purple carpet in this fiery orange Oday Shakar gown with steamy lace side-panel cut outs, and oh-so-touchable big country hair. I truly have no critiques; she looks superb.
Dear Lisa Marie: As the daughter of Elvis, and therefore, Princess of Rock n Roll, you really need to step up your game. This outfit makes it look like you’re heading to a mobster-themed birthday party, not a nationally televised award show. Your dress is drab, your hat is, well, confusing, and while your shoes may very well be the best part of your ensemble, you really should try and find some kicks that cover your tacky foot tattoo. We’re telling you this out of love, honey, honest. With love, your friends at PopWrapped.
AnnaSophia Robb took a cue from the country crowd: the more sparkle, the better. Robb looks young and fresh in this Georges Chakra Couture mini. While she still has a way to go before she lives up to her character’s infamous fashion status (Robb plays a young Carrie Bradshaw on the CW’s The Carrie Diaries), she is well on her way. Her simple hair and makeup really give this dress, and those Brian Atwood heels, the opportunity to shine…no pun intended.
Jana Kramer was one of the only stars to go with a traditional gown for the event last night. While everyone else stayed fairly casual (we remember Carrie Underwood’s shorts, right?), Kramer instead decided to amp up the glam. And thank God she did because she looks amazing. The gown is Pavoni by Mikael D. and fits her like a custom-made glove. The lace overlay is sexy yet subtle, and her soft side-swept waves and red lips really bring the entire look together. She is, in my opinion, the best dressed of the evening. Do you agree?
Kacey Musgraves also decided to stick with the sparkle in this blush Gomez-Gracia mini. Yawn. I won’t go so far as to say that she looks bad, because she doesn’t, she just looks boring; especially if you look at her after seeing Kimberly Perry or Jana Kramer. She looks fine, but when you’re at an event like this, fine really doesn’t cut it.
Hey, Ed Sheeran. Yeah you. I have just one question for you: ummmm, what? I know you’re still kind of new to the whole celebrity thing, but uh, we’re going to need you to never wear anything like this again, okay? If this is all that dwells in your closet, then we won’t be asking for an invitation to your Lego house. Oh, and, comb your hair. Thanks so much.
Cassadee Pope falls in line with Kacey Musgraves. Sparkly mini, ombré hair, and right hand on right hip. YAWN! Again, she looks fine. But again, when you’re at a show like this, your goal should be to wow, not bore. Next!
Lenny Kravitz looks like, well, Lenny Kravitz. I think if I ever saw him dressed in anything other than this leather pants, vest, leather jacket, scarf, unnecessary sunglasses, and way too-much-jewelry get-up, I might have a stroke. We get it, you’re edgy. But you’re also not a spring chicken anymore and you should probably start to think about dressing your age. I’m fairly certain you’ve built up quite a nice savings account over the years so, next time, maybe splurge for a nice suit. I hear Tom Ford makes some great ones. Or, maybe even Armani! Either way, I’m sure designers would be chomping at the bit to get you in one of their pieces. The options are there man, take them!
Nelly is no stranger to the ways of the country music world. His song “Over and Over Again” with Tim McGraw back in 2004 was a huge success. He even decided to dress the part, well, kind of. His vest/no shirt/jeans combo certainly feel a little bit country, but it’s country with a hip-hop twist. Especially when paired with those Air Jordan 11 Low-tops he’s sporting (which, by the way, are not available to the public yet). But, again, I don’t think it would kill these guys to dress up a bit, do you?!
Maybe I’m just asking for too much. Perhaps expecting men to dress appropriately for the event is just too tall an order. Is this sexist? Perhaps. But even though I don’t love what all the female stars wore to the CMTs, their attire was at least in accordance with the event they were attending. Jason Aldean just looks a mess. He looks frumpy, way too casual, and rumpled. And, I’m sorry, but are those holes in your already frayed jeans, Mr. Aldean? Unacceptable. Top it all off with that dirty cowboy hat and worn shoes, and you’ve got yourself one huge mess of a cowboy. Fashion may not be your thing, but that is why God invented stylists, so that they could make it your thing without you actually having to think about it. Look it up!
Ah, Dustin Lynch. You were thiiiiis close to being best-dressed man of the night. Well, you still probably claim that title since the competition was so very slim. At first glance, Lynch looks pretty good with a sleek jacket, dress pants and shoes, and a nice black shirt. I was even willing to forgive that hat, since it IS the Country Music Awards after all. Then I looked closer and saw that nothing he is wearing fits right. His sleeves and pant legs look baggy, not to mention unforgivably wrinkled; and he should have hired a tailor to make sure that everything was at least the proper length and fit. Luckily for him, that killer smile and those baby blues help to ease the disappointment I felt after closer inspection. Sigh.
And last, but most certainly not least, we have Duane Chapman (better known as Dog the Bounty Hunter) and his wife Beth. Let me be the first to congratulate this couple on their fabulous matching mullets. I imagine it’s not easy maintaining such a persnickety hairstyle. I never thought I’d say this, but Dog really doesn’t look THAT bad compared to some of the other ensembles we saw from this event. At least he has on a jacket, khakis, and a collared shirt. I give him an “E” for effort, at least. Beth…is a different story. There is nothing wrong with a woman having curves. At least, there better not be or I am in serious trouble. However, Beth Chapman could learn a thing or two from the likes of Adele, Octavia Spencer, and Queen Latifah. Those buxom beauties know how to dress for their body types. This dress on Mrs. Bounty Hunter just brings attention to her sizeable, um, assets. Honestly, I’m not sure how she stays upright.
Stay tuned for our fashion recap following the Tony Awards, which will air this Sunday, June 9th!
