‘Ferdinand’ First Trailer Talk

Ice Age company Blue Sky Studios has released their first trailer for this holiday season’s new animated Ferdinand, smashing theaters December 15.

Wait, I’ve just been handed a BULL-etin! See what I did there?

Not enough people are talking about the new Ferdinand (2017) trailer that dropped almost a month ago from Blue Sky Studios and director Carlos Saldanha (veteran studio director of Rio (2011), Rio 2 (2014), Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009), Ice Age: The Meltdown (2006), and co-director of Robots (2005) and the original Ice Age (2002)). So we’re going to talk about it! At least, the little that we know at this point.

The trailer seems to be advertising quite an inspirational and fun family film with plenty of laughs, along with spectacular-looking animation all around, centering on the “unlikely hero” of a lovable goofball bull with a colorful host of other animal characters.

Some may know that Walt Disney Productions created an eight-minute animated short called Ferdinand the Bull back in 1938 (which you should check out when you get the chance), which similarly to this upcoming film, is based on “The Story of Ferdinand” book from 1936 by Munro Leaf; so, this is not the first incarnation of Ferdinand the Bull seen on screen, but it might be the first for many of this generation. With Coco (2017) from PIXAR coming out the month before this, 2017 is certainly going to see its share of Spanish animated stories and characters!

The last effort from Blue Sky Studios was last year’s Ice Age: Collision Course (2016), which, while this writer enjoyed it, received mixed to negative reviews and unfortunately bombed at the box office. Hopefully this time Ferdinand will return to form like the humble but innovative Peanuts Movie (2015) and save the day!

Ferdinand rams its way into theaters on December 15, 2017, and will star the voice talents of Kate McKinnon, David Tennant, John Cena, Gina Rodriguez, Gabriel Iglesias, and Karla Martínez.
