None of us were untouched by the tragedy in Ferguson, Missouri when unarmed black teenager Michael Brown was killed by police officer Darren Wilson earlier this year.

Since then, protests demanding change have been rampant in the town, only escalating there and across the world this week when the grand jury decided not to indict Wilson on the manslaughter charges.

Now, Oscar nominee Amy Berg is creating a documentary entitled Black Male Crisis, the title of which speaks for itself.

She and actor Nate Parker, who is co-producing the project, teamed up a few years ago over their mutual concern regarding racial relations in the United States.

“Our conversations about race in this country have been ongoing. It is truly a tragic state that we are in that we have to remind people that we abolished slavery 150 years ago, but the sad statistics today show that black people are targeted every day by the system. Our systemic racial profiling is very deeply embedded in our culture, and the Michael Brown case shows we have to find a way to change this. Now,” Berg said.

On Wednesday (Nov. 26), Berg and Parker, along with their second co-producer Matthew Cooke, debuted their Indiegogo campaign for the documentary. In order to fund their work, they’ll need $25,000. So far, the campaign has raised nearly $5,000.

Below is an excerpt from the team’s explanation of the campaign:

In response to the growing problem of racial disparity due to the ongoing dehumanization of black men, actor and activist Nate Parker is setting out on a journey of investigation. He will venture into black communities to speak to various stakeholders about the crisis facing these men. Through the examination of specific cases, Nate will create relevant and responsive discourse with the intention of mining strong and tangible solutions to combat this ever-growing crisis.  We will also highlight existing programs that are creating effective and sustainable counter action to the crisis.

The crisis itself will be brought forward and represented through interviews, news excerpts and historical footage. We find it extremely vital to recognize that the racial climate we exist in today is symptomatic of a larger problem that was established centuries ago.  We will create a visual timeline of a systemic conditioning that will provide the viewer proper context for post Civil Rights America, where – in truth – very little has changed from times long past.

Provided with details of the campaign is a list of 15 unarmed black men who were murdered within the last four years alone, whose stories will be included in the documentary.
