Earlier this week, Angelina Jolie revealed that she had undergone a preventative double mastectomy. She made the decision after being tested positive for the BRCA1 gene. This gene is linked to breast cancer and gave her an 87% chance of contracting the cancer.

After disclosing this, the media and other celebrities have called her a hero, stating that what she did was brave.

The music group, Garbage, begs to differ.

Following the news, the group took to Twitter and asked: “Why is Angelina Jolie talking about her tests + preventative procedures most women can’t afford, being considered heroic by the media?”

Why shouldn’t she be seen as a hero? She’s taking matters into her own hands to make sure that she doesn’t put her life in jeopardy. If everybody who knew they were at risk of cancer took preventative measures, we’d have less cancer in the world.

Jolie says that she spoke out about it to educate other women who may be in the same position that there are ways to stop it before it even starts. Her partner, Brad Pitt, fully supports her, saying: “It was really important to her to share the story, and that others would understand it doesn’t have to be a scary thing. In fact, it can be an empowering thing, and something that makes you stronger, and us stronger.”

Points to both of them for having the courage to not only do this,  but for being brave enough and strong enough to share with the world. I wish her all the best in her recovery.
