Fifth Harmony Talk About the Elevator, Upcoming

Jason Scott

Staff Writer

Everyone's favorite girl group is about to take the world by storm. Fifth Harmony, who appeared on second series of The X-Factor, are set to drop their debut EP next week, titled Better Together. Featuring their hit "Miss Movin' On," the project promises to showcase the girls' affinity for writing catchy and memorable pop music. "I think collectively, the EP represents all of us," member Ally Brooke says, "because we co-wrote [on it]. It comes from a place we can relate to." On the five-track project, the group's musical influences run the gamut. "[We were definitely influenced by] some ‘80s artists like Whitney Houston and Prince but Demi [Lovato] really inspired us, too, and also Taylor Swift," Ally adds. With the build up to the EP's release (October 22), the girls were in agreement that this is a major turning point for the group. "This is gonna be huge," as Ally asserts. Since appearing on FOX's hit talent series last fall, 5H have built their brand slowly but surely, especially with piano-driven covers on their YouTube channel, including clips of Rihanna's "Stay," Lana Del Rey's "American" and "Thinking 'Bout You" by Frank Ocean. Lauren Jauregui chimes in, "We’re really excited for everyone to hear what we’ve been working on." Can they contain their excitement? "No, we can't," Camila Cabello responds before melting into a fit of giggles. Within five minutes of our interview, it is quite clear that the girl group, once solo singers from opposite ends of the country, are like long-lost sisters. When broached on the topic of creative control on the project, Ally is confident in their artistic vision. She explains, "They [producers] would show us songs, and we’d pick some of them. Or we got to co-write on a lot of the songs. It’s a piece of us." If one track on the EP represents the group the most, "It would probably be 'Who Are You,'" Ally, Lauren, Camila, Normani Kordei and Dinah Jane Hansen reply in perfect unison. The stirring ballad shows up in the number 4 slot on the EP and allows the girls to shine through their pitch-perfect inflections and tight harmonies. As far as what the next single will be, Camila was rather coy. "We do [know]," she teases, laughing, "but we can't tell you." "We recorded it," Lauren quips. On October 26, Fifth Harmony will perform on the Hub Network's First Annual Halloween Bash, an honor the pop group doesn't take too lightly. "They pretty much just asked us, and we said yes," Ally laughs. "We get to dress up in costumes, so it’s going to be [a blast]." On Twitter, the girls teased a "Halloween treat" at the event. "We might be doing something...but we might not be...or we might," Lauren toys with her fans. Well, Harmonizers, you'll "just have to tune in to find out" what your idols have up their sleeves. Call us intrigued! Of course, Fifth Harmony's hugely successful year would not have been possibly without appearing on The X-Factor last fall. As a result, they've garnered nearly 900,000 Twitter followers. When asked for question submissions for the interview, their fans unanimously asked, "what happened in the elevator?" So, we asked the girls to reveal exactly what went down. "That going with us to the grave," Camila says. "But we love you!" Ally exclaims. "What happens in the elevator, stays in the elevator," Normani discloses. Well, I guess we'll never know. "We're a pretty mysterious group," Lauren maintains with a smirk. In regards to their passionate fan base, one thing is for certain, their Harmonizers are lovingly obsessed online, even dedicating Twitter accounts to the girl group. On if they stalk their fans when they get tweeted, Ally says, "Oh, definitely, at least for me. Their names are sometimes super funny. We click on their little names and just stalk them." "Sometimes it’s super cool to see their name once and you kind of recognize it like ‘hey!’" Normani notes. "Kiyonce! She’s one of my favorite ones," Lauren name drops. Hosted by Kenan Thompson (Saturday Night Live), the Hub Network's First Annual Halloween Bash (8pm EST) will also feature a performance by Cody Simpson and appearances by Nolan Gould (Modern Family), Zachary Gordon (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Bailee Madison (Trophy Wife), Rico Rodriguez (Modern Family), Keean Johnson (Spooksville) and Todd Newton (Family Game Night), among many others. Additional presenters and performers will be announced soon. Don't forget to grab your copy of Better Together on iTunes on October 22. Listen to a preview of "Miss Movin' On" below.
