Video game fans had a surprise early this week, as photos from the new Tomb Raider film were released to the public. The images, released by the Daily Mail, feature Alicia Vikander running, jumping, and engaging in the kind of action we’d expect from Lara Croft.
Directed by Roar Uthaug and written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, the film will feature Lara hunting for her missing father. The cast not only features an Oscar winner in the form of Vikander, who won the prestigious award for The Danish Girl in 2016, but also Dominic West as Lara’s father, and Daniel Wu as a ship captain assisting her in her search. Emmy-nominated actor Walton Goggins will be portraying the film’s villain. Goggins has previously described the film as "Raiders of the Lost Ark meets a genre version of the Joseph Conrad novel Victory: An Island Tale."
The franchise, of course, began as a video game that made its debut in 1996 with a reboot in 2013. The reboot sold over 5 million copies, and the most recent game in the series, Rise of the Tomb Raider, sold over a million copies by the end of 2015. The Tomb Raider games have sold over 58 million copies worldwide, making it one of the most successful video game franchises in the world. That means there are a lot of fans to please -- and not only in terms of a video game audience. The original Tomb Raider films from Paramount -- Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life -- starred Angelina Jolie and made $432 million combined.
The new Lara Croft film is scheduled to hit the big screen March 16, 2018. Are you excited to see Alicia Vikander in the role? Let us know in the comments below!
