Before The Hunger Games and Divergent, there was the 1993 children’s novel The Giver by Lois Lowry.  Set in a society that first appears to the reader to be perfect and harmonious, the novel reveals a dystopian society in which humans have eliminated emotion completely and been divided into communities with assigned roles. The story centers on Jonas who is selected to become the “Receiver of Memory,” the person who inherits all of the memories of life before the conversion to “Sameness.”  Jonas is played by 24 year old Brenton Thwaites, though the book has Jonas taking on the responsibility of the Receiver at the young age of 12. Years in the making, the big screen is now ready to tell the story and has some heavy hitters casted.  Academy Award winner, Meryl Streep, plays the villainous role of the community’s chief elder and while fellow Oscar alum, Jeff Bridges, plays the community’s current receiver who will be passing on the memories to Jonas.  Also casted are Odeya Rush, Taylor Swift, Katie Holmes and Alexander Skarsgard. Hollywood has taken the liberty to move away from some of the main aspects of the book, including the character’s inability to see in color, one of the main aspects in Jonas’ coming of age in the novel. “The way things look and the way things are, are very different.”  Check out the newly released trailer for The Giver and let us know if you think they’ll be doing Lois Lowry’s classic justice.  The film is set for release in theaters on August 15, 2014.
