We love it when one of our favourite movies makes the jump from the silver screen to the stage. Add in Woody Allen’s typical New York wit and satire, some gangsters and 1920s glitz and glamour and you’ve got a sure-fire hit on your hands. That’s even before you factor in five-time Tony winner Susan Stroman (The Producers) as director and Scrubs’ Zach Braff making his Broadway debut. Now Entertainment Weekly has released the first photo of the cast along with a behind-the-scenes photo shoot video in the lead up to the world premiere of the musical Bullets Over Broadway.

Based on Allen’s beloved 1994 crime-comedy, the musical tells the story of an idealistic young playwright, David Shayne, who arrives in the Big Apple to take on Broadway. Unfortunately for him, he finds himself entangled with the mob when a gangster’s talentless girlfriend gets cast in his show.

Braff stars as Shayne with Masters of Sex’s Heléne Yorke as the mobster’s girlfriend. They will be sharing the stage with Marin Mazzie, Brooks Ashmanskas, Nick Cordero, Vincent Pastore, Lenny Wolpe and Betsy Wolfe.

Allen has written the book for the musical with existing music from the 1920s.

Bullets Over Broadway will take up residence at the St. James Theatre with previews from March 11 and opening on April 10.
