Footballer, model: Is Action Star Next for David Beckham?

No one has a right foot quite like him or can grace an underwear advert with such flair but how about fighting off baddies and coming to the rescue of some damsel in distress? While David Beckham may have retired from football earlier this month, it appears that there will be no rest for the wicked. At least, if good friend Tom Cruise has any say in it.

Cruise wants to fill in all of Becks’ free time now and make him into a movie star. A source close to the pair recently spoke to the Daily Star saying: “David has always wanted to be a leading man in action films and Tom promised him a long time ago he would make those dreams come true. And now that Becks has called time on football, he is ready for his friend to make good on his promise.”

At 38 years old and in top physical fitness from football, now would be the perfect time for Beckham to make the transition into films. He’s still got the looks to land the leading roles and has the physical ability and stamina to handle a number of his own stunts.

The unlikely pair became friends when the Beckham moved to LA with his wife, Victoria and their children in 2007 following his signing with Major League Soccer team, LA Galaxy. Victoria also became friends with Cruise’s then-wife, Katie Holmes, and both couples were often sighted around LA together.

While relations between the foursome have appeared to cool (rumours of Cruise attempting to get them involved in Scientology have been thought to be the cause), the source and Beckham have spoken out about their friendship. The source quashed the rumours stating that “David still keeps in touch with Tom and believes he’ll stand by his promise to help him become a star”.

And just last year in an interview with Esquire, Beckham came out in support of Cruise following the breakdown of his marriage with Katie Holmes. When asked about their friendship, he said: “Do I ride my bikes with Tom? Yeah I do. Have we become good friends over the years? Yes, we have become very good friends”.

With Cruise currently working on bringing Mission Impossible: 5 to the big screen, might it be the perfect vehicle to launch Becks’ action career? Only time will tell, but it would be an interesting pairing.
