It’s official. Fox cancelled the drama series Pitch after one season. This isn’t a complete surprise since Fox opted not to pick up additional episodes of the series and recently released the show’s writers a few weeks ago.
The series starred Kylie Bunbury (Ginny Baker) as a rookie pitcher and the first woman to play in Major League Baseball. It also starred Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Mike Lawson) as Padres’ captain and mentor. Mark Consuelos (Oscar Arguella) served as the team’s general manager and Dan Lauria (Al Luongo) portrayed the team’s manager.
Executive Producer Kevin Falls broke the news about the cancellation to fans via Twitter. In addition to thanking the cast and crew, Falls also made sure to thank the fans for trying to save the show. Although the show had an interesting premise and a solid cast, the ratings were just not there.
With a heavy heart, Kylie Bunbury shared the following on her Instagram account.
My heart is heavy. ???? Pitch will not be returning. I don't have some eloquently thought out caption, because I'm still processing it all. Ginny Baker has profoundly changed my life and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to play a role that resonated with so many people. I wasn't ready to let go of Ginny, but more than anything I wasn't ready to let go of my Pitch family- the cast, crew, creators and writers, thank you for the magic. MOST IMPORTANTLY!!!- Thank you to all of the fans who took the journey with us! Your support and love for the show has always moved us deeply! I love you all. ?? Ginny Baker out ???????
Dan Laura also took to social media to share a message with fans.
Throughout the course of the season, Ginny struggled with not only being a rookie but being the first female player and all the attention that followed. She developed a close friendship with Mike and the two ended up kissing in the second to last episode. They both ignored the kiss in the following episode and he ultimately decided to reconcile with his wife, frustrating Bawson fans in the process. Ginny’s season ended with an injury and the second season would have focused on her earning her spot back. It looks like we'll never know if things work out with Mike and his wife or if he has lingering feelings for Ginny.
“Ginny is very much alone and doesn't have a lot of allies. We wanted to go into season two with the question of how did she pick up the pieces? Who came to her side? Did she do it alone? Are there new people trying to help? She got over an obstacle when she became the first female pitcher in MLB and we wanted to set her up with significant obstacles in the second season,” Falls shared.
Season 1 contains ten episodes and the final episode of Pitch aired on December 8, 2016. No word on what's next for Bunbury, but Consuelos will be headed to Riverdale as Veronica's father, Hiram Lodge.
