Film enthusiasts like myself always have fun imagining alternate movie universes that could have been, considering that with one simple “yes” or “no” from an actor or director, the decision of what face will appear on t-shirts and lunchboxes for years to come is made. For every casting decision, there are several considerations that never materialize such Emma Roberts as Katniss Everdeen, Zac Efron as Spiderman, or even Frances Bean Cobain (pictured above) as….Bella Swan? What? Yes, you read correctly!
During a recent interview with Howard Stern, mom Courtney Love divulged the information that her daughter was offered the coveted role of Edward Cullen’s main squeeze (or should we say bite?) in Stephenie Meyer’s wildly popular Twilight series.
Frances Bean is the only child of the late Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain, and musician/actress Courtney Love. An aspiring artist, the 20-year-old is often compared to her legendary father for their striking physical similarities. This resemblance may have been a factor which led to the acting offer. According to Love, a script was sent to Frances after her picture in a magazine caught the eye of casting. Love tells Stern that a variety of issues contributed to the decision of declining the role, the most important perhaps being the fact that the then 13-year-old Frances Bean was simply not fond of the material. While skeptics may wonder why a teenager would turn down the prized role with seasoned veterans such as Michelle Trachtenberg and Sara Paxton in the mix of competition, mom Courtney maintains that the decision to decline was a wise one, sparing her daughter the media scrutiny and craze that came to surround Twilight.
Although Lionsgate has not yet responded as to whether or not Cobain was ever a consideration for Bella Swan, it is not completely difficult to imagine this to be true. With a porcelain complexion and deeply intense eyes, Frances could indeed depict a very realistic Bella on the screen. This would not have been her debut, however, with an appearance as an infant in the Nirvana video “Sliver” being her first time in front of the camera. Now how many kids can make that claim to fame? In recent pictures, she also seems to have adopted her dad’s rocker style of band tees and boots. While many young Twihard fans may not be aware of landmark Nirvana material such as, “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” Kurt Cobain was a pioneer of his genre. Let’s not forget that Twilight does take place near Seattle, the birthplace of grunge. Coincidence? Perhaps—but something tells me that Frances Bean is not exactly a spray-tan type of girl; I think she could have easily fit right in with the Cullens. She’ll just have to wait for the next project to ‘sink her teeth into’… Sorry, couldn’t resist that one!
