Funny Or Die Releases Apology For Hoverboard Hoax

Back to the Future II introduced the world to an idea that got the world buzzing in 1989: hover boards! Set in 2015, people imagined that this technology would be available in their lifetimes. And why not?

But year after year, as children turned into teenagers and teenagers into adults, we all faced the disappointment that hover boards were not yet a reality.

Until earlier this week, that is. HUVr released a YouTube video showing the technology was finally here! And a year earlier than the movie predicted!

The video begins with Christopher Lloyd, who portrayed the pop icon Doc Brown in the movie franchise, handing a hover board to legendary skateboarder, Tony Hawk. Hawk goes on to demonstrate the hover board, saying that it’s much easier to control than he imagined.

The video is filled with other famous faces trying out the new technology, including Moby and Terrell Owens. Everyone raves about how great the HUVr board is.

The YouTube video quickly spread around the internet, gaining over 5 million views in just 2 days. People around the world rejoiced at the thought of finally getting their hands on the elusive hover board they had always dreamed of.

That is, until one of the costume designers on the set added the video to her resume. It didn’t take long for HUVr’s story to unravel. And it turns out, we’d been pranked by FunnyorDie!

Funny or Die released another video of Christopher Lloyd where he expresses his shame for being a part of such a scandal and goes on to say the “rascals” of FunnyorDie tricked us all and he was indeed “hoodwinked” into believing the technology was real.

But what of the crane and wires, Doc? Lloyd goes on to say he was “blinded by his own belief” and blocked the memory of the wires and cranes. Lloyd ends by telling viewers to go to FunnyorDie’s Facebook page to comment on the video and enter for a chance to win the hoax of a hover board which was autographed by all the celebrities involved.

HUVr may not have the technology, but they gained 14,000 followers on Twitter and 109,000 fans on its Facebook page by mid-day Wednesday. They have since posted apologies for “lying.”

Tony Hawk released an apology video on RIDE Channel’s YouTube, saying he was sorry people took it seriously and thought everyone would be able to see it was a fake. Hawk also expressed his desire for hover boards to be a real thing someday but said, “until then, we still need roads.”
