Now that’s what you call a curveball!

Nintendo just nonchalantly announced the gaming item diehard fans of their systems have been waiting for since the second it was revealed that Super Smash Bros. would be a thing on the Wii U: a GameCube controller adapter.

For those not in the know, the GameCube controller, though for a now outdated (but forever-loved) console, has been the go-to device for most Smashers around the globe since its introduction in Super Smash Bros. Melee. It was well-received during its incorporation into Brawl years later, too. So, in a move that shows director Masahiro Sakurai really does care about the competitive and/or long-standing fans, he’s gotten the much-lauded controller making the rounds for the next home console installment coming this Winter, too.

It all came unexpectedly and literally out of nowhere, the announcement being placed at the butt-end of a video spilling the deets for an upcoming tournament. Aside from allowing the traditional GCN control method to be incorporated into Super Smash Bros. once more, the GameCube Controller Adapter bodes well for the expansion of the Wii U’s software lineup in general.

Following the news of Nintendo’s announcement, the term “GameCube” trended on Twitter for hours!

GoNintendo has the whole event chronicled, stating, “Man, this is pretty crazy. Nintendo gives us a surprise announcement for a GameCube controller adapter on Wii U and the internet lights up. Take a look at the top U.S. trends right now!”

Indeed, Nintendo fans all across the globe, though especially here in the States, were in quite the gleeful tizzy over this! Nintendo is no doubt depending greatly on the upcoming Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8 titles to light up their currently poor sales’ charts, and with franchises as strong as those and a dedication to fans even as niche as the ‘Cube lovers, it’s hard not to root for them.

What other surprises are waiting for us just around the corner at this year’s E3? We’ll find out in just about 10 days now!
