After 3 years on The X Factor UK, Gary Barlow has announced he will be leaving the show at the end of this season.

On the first live episode of the season, Barlow waited until the singing trio Rough Copy closed the show with “In the Air Tonight” to announce this season would indeed be his last. The announcement follows rumors that this would be his last season appearing as a judge.

“I’m so glad for my last year on the show, I get to mentor you guys,” he said to the group.

Barlow replaced Simon Cowell in 2011 and said he felt it was the “right time” to leave the show.

“A show like this needs to stay fresh and exciting, so it’s a great opportunity for someone to come in and take the show past its incredible ten year anniversary.”

A representative of the show stated that Barlow has plans to focus on his own music in the upcoming year; but, for now, he will continue to work with and mentor his groups on the show.

“We’d like to thank him for an amazing contribution over the last three years,” the representative said.

Barlow did not give any further details regarding his decision to leave.

To promote Since I Saw You Last, his first solo studio album in 14 years, earlier this month, Barlow announced a UK tour to begin in April. He is also planning to go into the studio with Take That at the beginning of the year to finish off the album with the group; A Take That tour is a possibility before the end of 2014.
