The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, released in 2011, will be getting a sequel. However, director David Fincher will not be returning. Sony Pictures has hired Fede Alvarez (Don't Breathe, Evil Dead) to direct the sequel titled The Girl in the Spider's Nest. Sony expects to have the sequel ready for an October 2018 release.
Also not returning to the sequel are stars Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig. The Wrap reports that the search is on for replacement actors and that Alicia Vikander was being sought after in 2015 for the lead role of Lisbeth Salander. More recent reports suggest that Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson are the front runners for the role. Craig will not be returning in the role of Mikael Blomkvist, a love interest of Salander. No word on whether this role will be recast or if the film will diverge from the book and have a new love interest. While it is disappointing when a cast changes in the middle of a franchise, Salander's hair, makeup, and piercing should be enough to help disguise a new actress.
Alvarez commented on his appointment as director, saying:
"I’m hugely excited and grateful for this opportunity. Sony has become family to me and I can’t think of a more thrilling project to celebrate our relationship. Lisbeth Salander is the kind of character any director dreams of bringing to life. We’ve got a great script and now comes the most fun part — finding our Lisbeth."
The Girl in the Spider's Nest is based on Stieg Larsson's Millennium book series. This second film in the franchise is actually adapted from the fourth book in the series, which was written by David Lagercrantz not Larsson. This is the first adaption of The Girl in the Spider's Nest, whereas the other three novels have all been made into Swedish films.
