The '90s kid inside of me is currently shrieking. Yes, shrieking. Why, you ask? Sailor Moon is returning to North America for the first time in ten years! First of all, for those of you who have no idea what Sailor Moon is (I can't even fathom how deprived you've been), it's an anime based on a bestselling manga by Naoko Takeuchi, in which a teenage girl acquires powers and becomes a guardian known as Sailor Moon. She and others form an alliance known as the Sailor Guardians, charged with protecting the world from evil. Distribution company Viz Media now has exclusive North American rights to Sailor Moon through Toei Animation Co., and Viz has teamed up with Hulu to bring the incredible anime back to American audiences. “We’re pleased to partner with Viz Media to bring the beloved ‘Sailor Moon’ anime series back to North America. This fresh, uncut and uncensored release of ‘Sailor Moon,’ featuring the most accurate adaptation available, will be just as creator Naoko Takeuchi intended. We look forward to fans current and new discovering and falling in love with this classic series all over again," Masayuki Endo of Toei Animation announced. The first four episodes of the 200-episode series will air on Hulu on Monday, May 19, and two new episodes will air each Monday afterwards. The episodes will be subtitled at first, with English dubbed versions made available later on. This is too good to be true, and it only gets better! Not only will the original episodes air, but Viz also has rights to Sailor Moon's fifth season, Sailor Stars, which has never aired in the States before, as well as the upcoming season, Sailor Moon Crystal. In addition, three feature films and DVD/Blu-ray combo packs are planned for release by the end of this year. I watched this anime religiously as a child, so I can't even BEGIN to express my excitement right now. The video below is sure to knock you over with nostalgia if you've been a fan for as long as I have. Enjoy! [embed][/embed]
