Created by Google-owned robotics company Boston Dynamics, Atlas, described as an “agile, anthropomorphic robot” went on it’s first trek outdoors recently, with surprisingly entertaining results.

Video of the ‘adventure’, screened at the Fab Lab 11 conference in Cambridge, Massachusetts recently, sees Atlas stumbling and staggering around like he’s had one too many alcopops (can robots get drunk?)

The walk in the woods was designed to test the balance of the robot when in unstable and unpredictable environments, as BD founder Mark Raibert explained:

“Out in the world is just a totally different challenge than in the lab.”

In the video, Atlas is attached to a power source as he (it?) ventures through the wood-land and, although this is just the first outing, with more likely planned in the future, Raibert is confident that further advancements will be made:

“I’m not saying it can do everything you can do, but you can imagine if we keep pushing we’ll get there.”
