Staff WriterSandra Bullock seems to be America’s film muse in 2013. Gravity has not only stunned movie goers and critics; it has remained the number one movie in America for its third week in a row. With a budget of $100 million, Gravity has now grossed over $170 million since its debut on October 4, 2013. Earlier this year, another of Bullock’s films stunned with a profit that no one saw coming. In The Heat, she starred with Melissa McCarthy and the surprise hit grossed $159,325,998 domestically, with an initial budget of $43 million. Gravity is a breathtaking story of Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock) on her first space shuttle mission. She is joined by Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) who happens to be commanding his final mission into space. When a Russian missile strike destroys a broken satellite, the debris propels the astronauts in a race against time to make it back to Earth alive. While both visually stunning and haunting, Bullock’s performance is one of her best to date and touches all those who share in her story. The biggest box office surprise of the weekend is the lackluster debut of The Fifth Estate. Benedict Cumberbatch stars as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in this tale of a man who takes freedom to the point of exploitation on the basis of truth and transparency of information. While The Fifth Estate is also a must see film with groundbreaking performances, the move only grossed $1,714,000 debuting in eighth place.
