It sounds like the plot of a conspiracy ridden Hollywood film.

A group of Anonymous Billionaires backing a retired general to prevent the victory of a a rambunctious party outsider from claiming the Presidency.

This general is none other than James Mattis,a figure largely unknown among the greater American public, but is very popular and beloved among veterans and service members. Within military circles the general has earned quite a reputation for being an officer who genuinely cares for those who serve under his command especially those in the bottom rung.

He previously served as NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander, and was the commander of I Marine Expeditionary Force of the United States Marine Forces Central Command during the Iraq war. Coincidentally, a battalion under his command during this time became the subject of a book by journalist Evan Wright. This book was turned into the mini-series Generation Kill by HBO, in which Mattis was a minor character, but was often mentioned on-screen.

The people backing him are said to be conservative billionaires who have a great deal of political influence who are not happy with Trump’s rise in the Republican primary. They are more than ready to pool their resources behind the general and at their behest, a group of political operatives have already formed an outline for a strategy on how to go about the Presidential race.

But they still have to convince the General to throw his hat in. According to two individuals involved in the movement, Mattis has already received a package of memos.

A few republicans are already salivating at the idea of renowned war veteran to serve as a counter to Donald Trump, one of these is former Bush aide John Noonan.

“I think a great deal of Republicans would rally behind an American hero if the choice is between Mattis and Trump.” Noonan said, then added “[Mattis is] a man of character and integrity. He’s given his life to his country. How do you ask someone like that to leap headfirst into this toxic mud puddle of a race? It’s damn hard. But Trump is a fascist lunatic and Hillary has one foot in a jail cell. That means the lunatic can win. I’d be first in line to plead with the general to come save America.”

But it seems that the initial strategy is not for him to win, at first. His presence in the ballot is meant to gather enough electoral delegates to deny both Trump and Clinton from gathering enough electoral votes to clinch the Presidency.

This will force the United States House of Representatives to make the decision on who wins. And the strategists backing Mattis believes that in the scenario of a split house-which is likely, the legislators would favor the third choice.

Ah- the plot thickens.

But all this hinges on Mattis accepting the role , a source close to him had said “It is difficult—if not impossible—to see him accepting being drafted.”
