The sequel is coming! The sequel is coming! After many months of waiting for anything to happen with the production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, director James Gunn announced some of the actors who will be joining the cast for the newest Peter Quill/Star-Lord adventure.

In a tweet sent out February 17, Gunn revealed that Pom Klementieff (Hacker’s Game), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby), Chris Sullivan (The Drop), and—wait for it—Kurt Russell (lately of The Hateful Eight) have joined the production. Arguably the most known actor to join the cast, Kurt Russell is sure to add rough and tumble charm to a cast that is already positively drowning in those attributes. I honestly don’t know if my heart will be able to stand it.

The sequel is reported to follow the gang as they try to unravel the story behind Peter Quill’s family. Was Kurt Russell hired to portray someone that may turn out to be related to our handsome hero? It has definitely been a theory that a lot of fans have been championing—so I’m pretty sure there won’t be too many complaints if it turns out to be true.

As if that wasn’t enough Guardians specialness for one day, Gunn also tweeted the first official photo from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. All of our favorite characters have returned (look at baby Groot!) to reprise their roles: Chris Pratt (Peter Quill/Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (voice of Rocket), and Vin Diesel (voice of Groot).  A surprise hit of 2014, the original Guardians earned nearly $770 million dollars worldwide and it isn't hard to deduce that the sequel will probably do at least as well.

Thank goodness we get a few of these exciting nuggets sent our way since the sequel is not slated to be released until May 5, 2017! It’s a little much to ask of those of us that are already jumping up and down with excitement, but I think we can handle it--it's not like we have a choice. Mr. Gunn just needs to keep on doing what he’s doing and keeping us all in the loop.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is currently shooting at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta.
