Sorry Hellboy fans: it looks like after years of waiting, Hellboy 3 is confirmed as a no-go. Director Guillermo del Toro has never directly said no to the possibility of continuing the Dark Horse comic book-based series until recently, when he took to Twitter to say that he won’t be creating any more Hellboy movies.

While it was nice of del Toro to confirm the news rather than keep fans guessing, it will be disappointing to say goodbye to this series. Still, it isn’t exactly a surprise: along with the necessary parties being unavailable, Hellboy II: The Golden Army did not do well at the box office, though it did earn relatively positive reviews from critics. As of 2015, The Golden Army had an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and Roger Ebert even gave the film three and half stars, saying “In every way the equal of del Toro’s original Hellboy, although perhaps a little noisier, it’s another celebration of his love for bizarre fantasy and diabolical machines.”

Del Toro previously announced that there would be a possibility of Hellboy 3 back in July 2015, saying that Legendary Pictures would consider funding the project if the sequel to Pacific Rim did well at the box office. However, by September 2016, actor Ron Perlman, who portrays the titular character, announced on Twitter that he was not scheduled to reprise the role of Hellboy.

Though the movie may never come to pass, we do know what the plot would have featured thanks to an AMA del Toro did back in 2014. Hellboy 3 would have put major focus on Hellboy’s destiny.

“He has to become the beast of the Apocalypse to be able to defend humanity, but at the same time he becomes a much darker being.”

Sadly, looks like this story will never see the light of day. Are you sad over the Hellboy news? Share your sorrows in the comments section below.
