Tensions keep rising between actress Halle Berry and her ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry, with more absurd accusations having to be fought legally instead of discussing it privately between the two parties.
The actress has taken her ex-boyfriend to court once again, this time for trying to change their daughter’s ethnic appearance by straightening and coloring Nahla’s hair blonde.
Recent reports have been made that Gabriel had also used racial slurs against the 48 year old actress and that dying their daughter’s hair was the last straw. According to the X-Men actress, Halle believes that Gabriel is trying to make her daughter appear more white rather than embrace her black roots. The actress described it as a ‘potential psychological and physical damage’ to the child.
Despite Halle not appearing in court on Monday (24th Nov), her lawyer and Gabriel were present for the hearing where both sides tried to argue their cases to the court. In the end, the Judge decided on a no verdict, that both parties should not touch the natural state of Nahla’s hair.
In her testimony obtained by the Daily Mail, Ms. Berry said, “I strongly feel that Gabriel’s same underlying attitude is at the root in the changes which only he could have been causing to our daughter’s hair.” Halle continued, “I want both Gabriel and I to make decisions together that affect our daughter, her growth, her development and her general welfare. I continue to hope that Gabriel and I can find a way to work together to be successful co-parents. It was with regret that I concluded that I had to seek the court’s intervention on these issues, but until Gabriel recognizes the meaning of joint legal custody and how it is implemented, it appears that the court will be my only resort to safeguard Nahla’s best interests.”
Halle has discussed the importance of daughter’s ethnicity back in 2011 when she gave an interview with Ebony Magazine in which she stated that she hoped her daughter could identify herself with who she is and where she comes from and how she “perceives herself.” The actress continued with, “But I feel like she’s black. I’m black and I’m her mother, and I believe in the one-drop theory.”
Gabriel and Halle both met during a Versace photoshoot back in 2005; despite the longevity of the relationship, which also produced a child in 2008, the couple separated in 2010. Since then there has been a back and forth battle between the custody of 7 year old child.
Halle is currently married to Olivier Martinez.
Let’s just hope for Nahla’s sake that both parties come to a peaceful agreement on what is best for her.
