Hamilton has become a national phenomenon since Lin-Manuel Miranda first sang the title song for President Obama. Since, Obama has invited the cast to the White House to perform and has gone to the hit musical multiple times. Now, Hamilton: An American Musical on YouTube has posted the video of star and creator Lin-Manuel Miranda singing with George Washington actor Chris Jackson. The song “One Last Time” is Washington’s goodbye to Hamilton and politics.
It is the beginning of our political history, but now, after everything happening since the election, it truly hits home.
At a time in our country when we are saying goodbye to a president that many of us love and cherish, watching a performance like this can almost be too much. Obama was one of the first presidents that many of us voted for. He ushered in an era of change and became the president who told us “Yes, we can.”
Up until this point, many of us have pretended that his departure wasn’t happening. If we all pretend it doesn’t exist, it won’t happen, right? Well, we know that’s not true and that President Obama is, in fact, leaving the White House, but we can honor him while we still have nine days left.
Though this performance was from quite some time ago, it is relevant for now. Obama gave his farewell speech in Chicago, and, come January 20th, we will have a new president. So, for one last time, the people will hear from our beloved President Barack Obama.
Much like George Washington, you will go down in history for your brilliance and for the fact that you were the first (African-American president that is). So take a note from the cast of Hamilton and usher our amazing President off in style.
