NBC’s decision to cancel Hannibal came as a surprise to everyone, as the show had gathered quite a fandom. With online campaigns to save the series going on strong, it seems they might be pointless, as the cast has reportedly been released from their contracts. It was reported that Gaumont International Television, Hannibal producer, set the cast free shortly after the show’s cancellation. Both Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen have no longer any commitment to the series and are considered to be looking through other offers for both the big and the small screen. Even though that makes a fourth season of the show seem unlikely, the production company is still supposed to be looking for another distributor. If any luck is found in that, both actors will have to sign brand-new contracts in order to reprise their roles.
Unfortunately, there’s little chance of Hannibal eventually getting a fourth season. To begin with, there’s an exclusive link with Amazon, so the show can’t be picked up by another streaming service. In addition to that, the show’s developer and executive producer Bryan Fuller will be busy working on Starz’s forthcoming show American Gods for a while; he’s actually stated that if Hannibal gets another shot, it will take time for him to get back on board. Why on Earth is NBC cancelling all the fan-favorite shows?
