Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone has been named “nation’s favourite” children’s book in the UK.

J.K Rowling’s first novel was voted the ultimate book to read before the age of 14 by over 24,000 readers of all ages.

Other books on this list are The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Winnie-the-Pooh, The Fellowship of the Ring, Dr Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat, Charlotte’s Web and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

“As the biggest-ever grossing literary franchise, kids and adults alike clearly can’t get enough of Harry Potter. It’s a worldwide phenomena – it has captured the imaginations of a generation of readers who have grown up in love with Harry or Hermione” Booktrust’s head of arts, Claire Shanahan, said.

“Even when up against heavyweights such as Dahl and Tolkien, Rowling’s creation remains the nation’s firm favourite”.

Readers were asked to vote for their ultimate storybook to mark Children’s Book Week. The list began with 500 titles which were whittled down to 100 before readers could start voting. The titles were separated into age categories, in which Harry Potter’s first adventure won in the 9-12 age group.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was published on June 26th 1997, with its film adaptation being released on November 2001.
