“Frosted flakes, are more than good…THEY’RE GREAT!” The easily recognizable Frosted Flakes theme lost it’s trademark ending phrase last month when Lee Marshall, Tony the Tiger’s voice actor passed away at the age of 64. Mr. Marshall had been suffering from esophageal cancer and tragically lost his battle on April 26th at Santa Monica Hospital in California.
Lee Marshall first voiced the famous tiger’s catchphrase, “They’re grrrrrreat!” in 1999. In 2005, he completely replaced Thurl Ravenscroft, who had been voicing the animated mascot since 1952. Before landing the role of the beloved Kellogg Tiger, Lee Marshall spent his early career in radio as a DJ, as well as dabbling both as a news anchor and a sports broadcaster. However, his biggest break came when he was hired as a wrestling ring announcer and conducted interviews with many wrestling stars. Marshall even ended up winning the fan voted award of “Announcer of the Year.”
A Kellogg spokesperson announced, “We are saddened by the loss of Lee Marshall. His talent and warmth helped bring Tony the Tiger to life and will always be fondly remembered.” As of now there has yet to be an official replacement for Lee, but a CBS affiliate has confirmed that the company will try to stay true to Tony's voice. “it’s really looking for that tone of voice and keeping that consistency with the voice…certainly there will be minor differences.”
To Mr. Marshall from legions of fans of the popular cereal, may you rest in peace, and thanks for being “grrrrrreat”.
