Mariah Carey is said to be devastated and breaking down over her split with billionaire James Packer. This, according to a source close to the pop diva.

“The split has been devastating for Mariah,” the source told E! “She loved James and was planning to marry him … She made life changes for this man to prepare for their future as husband and wife, even relocating to L.A., at James’ request, so he could be closer to his children. Everything she has done over the past year is to prove how fully committed she is to their life together. She really wanted this to work. And then, completely out of the blue, it imploded.”

Carey has not addressed the split publicly since it happened, putting on a brave front and trying to be nonchalant about it, but, in reality, she’s slowly losing her mind underneath the guise of a smile. Sources state Carey is gradually dying inside.

According to the source, things took a turn for the worse in Greece, with “some sort of outburst” from James in which he stated that things were becoming “too much,” saying “I don’t know if I can do this. I can barely take care of my own children,” referring to his three children from his previous marriage to model, Erica Baxter.

After the incident, the couple were planning to meet again in L.A. to talk things out and had already set up a date this week. But, according to an insider, the day before the scheduled meeting, Carey was blindsided and found out that Packer had broken off their engagement through the press.

“Mariah and James never met up after that,” the source said, and how it was handled was said to be particularly jarring for the singer.

Now, people close to Carey are wondering if Packer had used her for her fame.

As for the rumors about an affair between the icon and her back-up dancer? An insider has defended the pop diva, saying “the stories out there are an exaggeration and they definitely feel like a convenient ploy to make this whole mess look like her fault”.
