The world’s most famous singleton is single one again, but not for the reason you might think. Helen Fielding is back with her latest Bridget Jones novel, Mad About The Boy, and she’s got some shocks in store for fans.

Fans were left speechless as excerpts from the upcoming novel were published in today’s Sunday Times Magazine. Turn away now if you don’t want to see a major spoiler and plot point from the new novel.

Fielding ended Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason full of hope and happiness as Bridget finally got the man and was engaged to the dashing human rights lawyer, Mark Darcy. He was the perfect gentleman and every woman’s dream. I mean he liked Bridget “just as you are”. So what could possibly happen to break this power couple up? It seems that Fielding has done the unthinkable and killed off Darcy leaving Bridget a widow.

Set fifteen years after The Edge of Reason, Bridget did marry Darcy and went on to have two children together. How Darcy meets his untimely end is not revealed in the extracts but the novel opens five years following his death with Bridget now a 51-year-old widow obsessed with her wrinkles and ready to re-enter the dating game.

The Telegraph reports that the novel will continue to focus on Bridget’s dating adventures, where she has acquired a new 30-year-old toy boy boyfriend, Roxter, who, like any modern girl, she met on Twitter.

Bridget Jones’ Diary was initially a newspaper column that appeared in 1995. Women fell in love with the tales of the smoking, drinking, slightly chubby unlucky-in-love singleton that was loosely based on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. This led to two best-selling novels and corresponding Hollywood films starring Renee Zellweger, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant.

Readers can catch up on what’s been happening in Bridget’s life and how Darcy died (which apparently is detailed in a flashback later in the book) when Mad About The Boy is released on October 10.
