He's All In: 50 Shades' Charlie Hunnam Begs Fans To Support Him

Many fans of the surprise hit erotic novel trilogy, Fifty Shades of Grey, were extremely vocal when it was announced that Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson had been cast as the adaptation’s leads, Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. However, Hunnam has attempted to placate fans, promising that he is taking his role “very seriously”. Hunnam has previously addressed his critics, admitting that he had “anticipated” the fan backlash. Now in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he opens up more on his feelings on undertaking this iconic role as well as providing insight into how he’s approaching the complex character. As with so many beloved characters that first appear in print, Christian Grey was so vivid and real to each reader, but also so unique. Whoever was cast in the role was not going to live up to the majority’s ideal and Hunnam certainly understands that: "There are so many fans of that book and I know that on the surface, I'm probably not what everybody imagined… reading is so personal and people bring a character to life in their imagination, they feel ownership over that character." And it is this “ownership” of the character that puts pressure on the artist that has to bring it to life. It is something that they have to deal with and try to move past because otherwise, as Hunnam admits, [it’s] daunting if I allowed myself to think about it too much.” Instead, Hunnam is using that time to focus his energies on creating and discovering the character for himself: "I'm taking it very seriously and intend to explore the nature of who this character is, what motivates him - and also dress up nice and look good in those suits." If you still doubt his commitment, you just have to turn to his current co-stars in FX’s Sons of Anarchy to hear his praises sung. Hunnam’s wife on the hit series, Maggie Siff, has said, “He doesn’t do anything unless he feels it deep down. He’s not going to do something because all of his agents are telling him to do something. That’s what makes me think it stands a chance of being really, really great. If he has that conviction going in, then you know it’ll be great.” Katey Sagal, who plays Gemma, agrees with his level of commitment saying, “he will throw himself 100 percent in.” Unfortunately, one thing that is certain is that whatever he does, there will be fans that feel he’s not “their” Christian Grey. You will be able to decide for yourself when Fifty Shades of Grey is released in cinemas next August.
