One of my favorite quotes from Madeleine L’Engle reads, “Hate hurts the hater more’n the hated.” Anti-gay activist David Benham learned that this Wednesday when his HGTV show Flip it Forward was canceled, and his brother Jason would NOT be moving forward.
Benham is a conservative activist who has publically campaigned against LGBT equality and reproductive rights. His father, preacher Flip Benham, led the abortion clinic protest group Operation Save America. The apple clearly doesn’t fall far from the tree.
While at a prayer rally (lead by himself) in Charlotte N.C., he told conservative radio host Janet Mefferd that the rally was needed to stop “homosexuality and its agenda that is attacking the nation” as well as “Demonic ideologies tak[ing] our universities and our public school systems.” He also said that his brother Jason helped him organize the prayer protest.
In 2012, Benham even compared the fight for gay marriage with Nazi Germany.
The announcement to cancel the show was made in a brief statement on Twitter, with the home and gardening network simply saying, “HGTV has decided not to move forward with the Benham Brothers’ series.”
Hate only sets us back as a culture and doesn’t tend to end favorably for either side. The sooner we all decide to love each other for who we are, the sooner we can start to fix the actual issues of the world.
