Staff Writerspeech before the students and faculty at Wilson High School during its annual gay pride festival this year. He was nervous. These were the same body of students and the same coworkers with whom he has shared many, many speeches with throughout the months. Yet, now—and during a time of celebration, at that –he was nervous? As it turns out, Cahall had good reason to be, as he grabbed a microphone last Thursday evening to announce that he was gay. Cahall burst into his announcement without hesitation after the nervous moments preceding his speech to say, “I am a proud gay man who just so happens to be the principal of Wilson High School.” He was met by a tremendous applause that reverberated throughout the perimeter. Following the amazing reveal, Cahall revealed, “What I kept thinking was, how can I be the principal of Wilson and oversee a pride day and tell kids to be themselves and be who you are and then not do that? It's hypocritical.” He went on to say in an interview with CNN and ABC affiliate WJLA concerning the amazing moment, "I never made this declaration before because I did not want my kids to think differently of me or to not respect me," Cahall told the students. "I have been in the shadows, but I am liberated today." It’s always a beautiful moment in time when someone realizes that they don’t need to hide behind a wall of insecurity. You can be exactly who you are and the people who love will love you regardless. The students at Wilson High’s reaction is proof enough of that. Congratulations, Mr. Cahall, and here’s to many more years of proudly serving Wilson High, now as an inspiration to all! Keep Up With PopWrapped On The Web!
