Disney announced on October 24 that the Sorcerer's Hat in their Hollywood Studios park will be removed
in early 2015.
“We will soon begin to re-imagine the park’s central hub by removing the Sorcerer’s Hat in early 2015. As part of that change, the store located underneath the hat will be closing, A closing date will be shared as we get closer to it,” the company said in a message to cast members.
The hat was erected in 2001 as part of the "100 Years of Magic" celebration and was wildly unpopular with Disney fans. It was designed to block the Chinese Movie Theater façade that Disney could no longer use for promotional materials, and was made to resemble the famous hat Mickey Mouse wore in Fantasia
. It has replaced the Earful Tower on promotional materials as well.
Rumors of its removal began circulating after the hat was not featured in recent maps and brochures, but no concrete date was given. The changes come alongside the closing of the American Idol Experience and the Studio Backlot Tour, with the Captain Jack Sparrow Experience soon to follow
on November 6. Rumors are now surfacing that this removal will allow the park to expand on its Cars
, Star Wars
, and Toy Story
Future plans for the park have not been announced.
