A mother and homeowner in the Baltimore area has received an exceptionally homophobic note on her porch due to the decorations in her yard.
Julie Baker, a widow and mother of four, had decorated and hung up the sinful string of lights without any obscure meaning. The lights were rainbow colored with the words, “ love” and “ohana.”
The note reads:
Dear resident of…
Your yard is becoming Relentlessly Gay! Myself and Others in the neighborhood ask that you Tone It Down. This is a Christian area and there are Children. Keep it up and I will be Forced to call the Police on You! Your kind need to have Respect for GOD.
A Concerned Home Owner.
It’s pretty clear that the “Concerned Home Owner” is only a rather rude human being, who clearly has no concept of “gay,” “Christian,” or grammar.
Seriously can’t believe they said ‘Your kind.’ My kind? You mean OUR kind? Human beings?
Julie was urged by her daughter to put the note online and to make a GoFundMe page. Julie had initially only asked for $5,000, however as the story went viral, she began to raise more and more money; she had now raised over $30,000.
When asked what she plans to do with it, she replied: “Needless to say…I need more rainbows…Many, many more rainbows…So, I am starting this fundraiser so I can work to make my Home even More ‘relentlessly gay.’ If we go high enough, I will see if I can get a Rainbow Roof!”
I seriously hope she gets that roof, not only because of the hatred she’s denying, but because a rainbow roof would be awesome.
In response to the hateful note Baker said, “Put simply, I am a widow and the mother of four children, my youngest in high school and I WILL NOT relent to hatred. Instead, I will battle it with whimsy and beauty and laughter and love, wrapped around my home, yard and family!”
What a great way to deal with this, Julie! Round of applause, everyone.
