P!nk’s “Just Give Me a Reason” feat. Nate Ruess of fun. was a huge hit in 2013. In fact not only did the single reach the top of the charts, it is the pop star’s biggest hit to date. It recently earned two Grammy nominations, one for Song of the Year and the other for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. I can’t imagine anyone else singing Ruess’ part on the heart wrenching song, but it almost didn’t happen.
In a recent interview with Billboard, P!nk revealed that it took many months to convince Ruess to hop on the track. The fun. frontman helped write the first verse and chorus of the song, but wasn’t too keen on providing his vocal talents. Why, you ask? “Nate wasn't sure that he wanted to be on a collaboration with a pop star. Their label is an independent label, they weren't sure,” she told the magazine, "It wouldn’t look good for their rep, I suppose."
But when P!nk brought up getting another artist to sing the song, Reuss immediately took the opportunity. “And I was like, ‘Yeah, I get it. I wouldn't want to be on a song with a pop star either. But you can't deny that it's a conversation—you just put the vocals down as the scratch vocal and I'll get Gotye to sing it.’ And I knew that was a huge dig.”
The label “pop star” is following her around and the singer is constantly proving herself to be more than that. “I'm never going to be asked to sing a song, because I'm a pop star. So I'm used to being shit on. I'm used to being the underdog. I'm used to being looked at as a corporation. And it's not until people hear me sing at that barbecue, or see [things like the Woman of the Year honor],” she said. “It keeps me motivated. But it is sometimes a total, huge pain in the ass.”
P!nk was recently named Billboard’s Woman of the Year and she definitely had a good year with her album The Truth About Love and her tour. She is the first confirmed performer for the 2014 Grammys, and we definitely can’t wait to see what she’ll have in store for her fans next year.
