Hugh Laurie’s gig on the Queen Mary, docked in Long Beach, California, will be available on DVD, Blu-ray, and digital download on October 22, 2013. The same performance was broadcast as a PBS special in August.
The actor/musician known for his role in the show, House, performed on the Queen Mary in March of this year, emulating one his musical heroes, Professor Longhair. Professor Longhair was a New Orleans blues singer and pianist who recorded his first live set in the same venue in March of 1975 for a party hosted by Paul McCartney. It was important to Laurie to seek McCartney’s blessing, which he did end up receiving.
Laurie spoke to Dave Walker in August saying of Professor Longhair, “I was between school and university, and, I remember very clearly, I put this record on and I just thought … I’m home. I found it. This is the guy that I always knew existed but didn’t know where. I knew he must have existed, and now I found him.”
The setlist for the show included tracks from both Laurie’s debut album, Let Them Talk as well as new album, Didn’t It Rain, which was released in May this year. Laurie leads on vocals, piano, and guitar and is joined by the Copper Bottom Blues Band, who also played with him during his European tour.
Laurie’s US/Canadian tour, also with the Copper Bottom Blues Band, kicks off this month in Nashville, TN.
