Ian Harding is most recognized for his role as Ezra Fitz in the ABC Family hit, Pretty Little Liars; and it seems he has a bit in common with his character in the danger loving sense. Harding is featured, along with Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Sierra Boggess, Lea Salonga and Telly Leung, in STARRY EYED: 16 Stories that Steal the Spotlight. Edited by Ted Michael and Josh Pultz, the book features fictional stories that chronicle the struggles of young actors in the pursuit of their dreams. Several celebrities offer up their own personal stories that are woven between each fictional work. Harding admits that it’s the danger and unknown that first drew him into acting; well, one moment in particular. As a senior in high school, Ian was cast as Mr. Biggley in a production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. A cast mate missed her entrance and Harding stepped up to the plate and began to improvise. “Something going wrong in a show is never fun. And trying to cover for someone else’s mistake can be heart-wrenchingly nervous. Would people think I was the one who messed up? Would they be weirded out? Would the director be upset with me? But ‘the show must go on’,” he recalls. Luckily for Harding, the crowd went wild, and found his on the spot dialogue hysterical. But, Harding reminds us that it’s not about the applause or audience reaction; but a certain “aliveness” that he experienced that really drew him in to the profession. “Danger, excitement, connectivity, the moment, and what comes out when those things are combined. Just throwing myself out there. That’s why I do it. It doesn’t matter if I’m brilliant, terrible, ugly, beautiful, happy, or sad. It’s getting out there anyway and knowing it will turn out as it should.” You can catch Ian when Pretty Little Liars returns this January on ABC Family! And, if you can’t wait that long, you can always pick up a copy of STARRY EYED: 16 Stories that Steal the Spotlight, available now on Amazon.
