IMDB Shuts Down Their Message Boards

You’ll have to find a new place to discuss your love of movies, because IMDB has shut down their message boards.

The popular movie and TV website, which has over 250 million users, closed its message boards and private messaging system on February 20. In a letter released the day before the message boards were shut down, IMDB cited “data and traffic” as the reason for the shutdown. It seems like not enough people were actually using the two features. This does not just apply to new movies; years of discussions from older movies are also gone.

It would seem social media is a main cause for the shut down — that’s where people are talking about entertainment, so there is no longer a need for message boards. That, and there is no denying that the boards had a well-known problem with internet trolls. Gizmodo highlighted some of the worst and weirdest posts that could be found on the boards, including questions about actors’ weights, insults, and more comments that are sure to make you question your sanity.

That’s not to say that the message boards were completely useless. Paste Magazine points out that no other web site had such passionate movie and TV discussion and that we shouldn’t have been so quick to dismiss it as a haven for haters.

IMDB was launched in 1990, and the IMDB message boards began in 2001. There is currently a petition circulating to save the boards that has nearly 10,000 signatures. It looks like movie buffs are seriously mourning the loss of this prominent discussion hub.

“The beauty of analyzing film and getting a deeper understanding of them by coming together and bringing up ideas of what a story is REALLY about in a movie that very few people have seen perhaps none in our social circles. Or perhaps finding friends that you otherwise would have no interaction with. Or just recommend obscure independent films that no one has heard about because it wasn’t funded by a major company that could afford advertising.”

Do you miss the IMDB message boards, or are you glad to see them (and the trolls) disappear?
