Don’t go looking to buy drugs, least of all on Instagram, and especially not by trolling through hashtags. Following the investigation by BBC social media unit #BBCtrending, Instagram has blocked searches for any terms associated with the suspected and very illegal sale of drugs by way of the photo-sharing app. The aforementioned investigation revealed that drug dealers have been posting photos of various drugs, including marijuana and MDMA, with users offering potential buyers deals. Basically, users are searching drug-related terms and finding drugs on offer as easily as finding a bunch of selfies you didn't ask people to post. The Facebook-owned social network issued a statement to the BBC saying that Instagram isn’t a place for people to buy things and that they “are simply a place where people share photos and videos.” However, a report by the BBC revealed that two parties had, in fact, finalized drug deals using other smartphone messaging apps like Whats App, Viber or Kik after finding sellers/buyers on Instagram. A spokeswoman told the BBC that Instagram has a clear set of rules regarding “what is and isn’t allowed on the site”. In any case if anyone were to now search using drug-related terms, the search will yield no results.
