In 2010 the SFX game was changed when Disney released TRON: Legacy, the highly anticipated sequel to their 1982 sci-fi flick Tron. Now it looks like we’re in for a third film, according to Legacy director Joseph Kosinski!
The idea of releasing a third film has been discussed off and on for the last few years, more or less ever since Legacy came out, but now it has a story and is being scripted as we speak! According to Kosinski, “Tron 3 delivers on the promise of TRON: Legacy, particularly the final scenes.” Evidently there was a “big clue” in the final scenes as to where Kosinski is planning on going with the next film.
Additionally he told Empire that there are some characters introduced at the beginning of Legacy who will have much bigger and more integral roles in the upcoming film. We assume this means we’ll get to see Cillian Murphy again as Edward Dillinger Jr. Hopefully they will also be bringing back Olivia Wilde as Quorra and Garrett Hedlund as Sam Flynn. Last we saw Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) he was being left behind and possibly destroyed inside the Grid, but who knows? We may be seeing him again, too. After all, a Tron film just wouldn’t be the same without him.
Kosinski didn’t give too much more away, but he does plan on shooting the film in the IMAX format. The film he is currently promoting, Oblivion, was shot the same way, as a matter of fact. You can catch Kosinski’s Oblivion in theaters stateside on April 19.
