It Was A Night Of Firsts On The Opening Episode Of This Season’s Dancing With The Stars
Joey O’Hern Staff Writer Last night the highly anticipated 17th season of Dancing With The Stars premiered on ABC and though it seems to get said every year, this really does look like it’s the best season yet! The show got started with a few new changes, one being the show has been cut back to only one show a week meaning that performances and eliminations will all happen in one single night. However the changes doesn’t stop there; instead of the contestants relaxing in the skybox they sit directly beside the judges making it easier to hear critiques of fellow dancers. So who were the standouts? Who pulled on our heartstrings and who got lost in between? Find out below: Clear Contenders: Amber Riley and Derek Hough - This pair danced a Cha-Cha that lit the ballroom on fire and without even saying it, Amber clearly told the other dancing celebrities to bring it! It probably didn’t hurt that Glee cast members Chris Colfer, Harry Shum Jr, Ashley Fink, Kevin McHale, Dianna Agron and Jenna Ushkowitz were there to cheer her on. Oh, and her partner is Derek Hough, the reigning champ.

Overall Score

: 27 which is the first time in DWTS history that anyone has had 3 “9s” from the judges. Corbin Bleu and Karina Smirnoff – The pair performed a gorgeous Contemporary routine that won over the judges early on.  Seeing that Corbin was part of the must successful movie musical franchise of all time (High School Musical) there was some expectation for him to be good and he was. But the question is have those HSM fans grown up and moved on?

Overall Score

: 24 Elizabeth Berkley and Cal Chmerkovskiy – The pair also took on a Contemporary routine. It’s no mystery if you are a fan of Berkley that she’s got some dancing experience, anyone remember Showgirls? The judges seemed to be impressed and if one thing is for sure it’s that Jessie Spano has still got it! Anyone get that joke? Anyone? I could see her height playing against her as she has legs for days.

Overall Score

: 24 Tugged at Our Heartstrings: Valerie Harper & Tristan McManus: By far the most emotional routine of the night. Valerie proved that not even cancer would stop her from competing! This woman is filled with grace and class and that conveyed on the dance floor. Her routine brought everyone to their feet with tears in their eyes. I see her going pretty far, it may not be on actually dancing ability but for the fact that she’s just enjoyable to watch.

Overall Score

: 21 Jack Osbourne and Cheryl Burke: It seems most people didn’t know that Jack has been living with Multiple Sclerosis so the fact that he’s out on the dance floor and doing it so with so much fun and pizazz make him even more fun to watch! Jack seemed a little stiff at times but with Cheryl Burke as his partner he’s sure to improve. And can we just mention how adorable his mom Sharon was in the audience over flowing with tears because she was so proud?!

Overall Score

: 23 And then there are the rest. Not necessarily good, not necessarily bad just lost in the mix of all the standouts and emotional stories. And the rest of the pack: Snooki and Sasha Farber: 23 – Who has really grown up and could easily be the dark horse. Christina Millian and Mark Ballas: 22 – Who I assume is no longer a part of The Voice? Brant Daugherty and Peta Murgatroyd: 22 – Who calls himself a “single threat”. Leah Remini and Tony Dovalani: 21 – Who was being cheered on by her BFF J.Lo! Bill Engvall and Emma Slater: 18 – Who shocked everyone and himself at how well he did. Keyshawn Johnson and Charna Brugess: 17 – Who, if we’re being honest doesn’t seem to be taking the competition seriously. Bill Nye and Tyne Stecklein: 14 – Who is loved by all and called “the heart of the show”. What did you think of the premiere? Did your favorite bust a move or just look busted? http://www.Facebook.com/PopWrapped http://www.SoundCloud.com/PopWrapped http://www.Twitter.com/PopWrapped http://www.Instagram.com/PopWrapped http://www.Pinterest.com/PopWrapped http://www.YouTube.com/PopWrapped http://www.PopWrapped.com
