It’s being described as a black comedy, and judging from the plot, that description is quite appropriate. The first trailer for new British film A Long Way Down debuted on January 27. Pierce Brosnan, Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul, Hostages’ Toni Collette, and Imogen Poots portray a disgraced television show host, a failed musician, a struggling single mother, and a troubled teenager. They encounter one another on the highest floor of the London skyscraper Toppers House on New Year’s Eve, each with the same goal in mind—to jump. Instead of jumping, however, they end up making a pact that none of them will commit suicide until Valentine’s Day. In the weeks following, the group forges a bond and become a surrogate family. Based on the bestselling novel by Nick Hornby, the film is spearheaded by French director Pascal Chaumeil, with a screenplay written by Jack Thorne. Hornby is no stranger to adaptations. Three of his novels—Fever Pitch, High Fidelity, and About a Boy—have transitioned to the big screen over the years. Unconventional and somewhat morbid first meeting aside, A Long Way Down does seem to offer a message of hope. We live in a world where entire campaigns have been launched to encourage people that suicide isn’t the answer no matter how dark things feel, so the film might really resonate with audiences today. After its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February, catch A Long Way Down in UK cinemas on March 21. A U.S. release date has yet to be announced.
