TV shows, sequels, and stars…OH MY! Bad Teacher is this year’s hottest ticket, what with the announcement that CBS will be airing a Bad Teacher spinoff series this fall. The most recent news that there will be a sequel to the 2011 film.
Movies like Bad Teacher aren’t typically what most would consider poignant and they certainly aren’t normally critically acclaimed (Bad Teacher has a 44% Rotten Tomatoes score). They are typically crowd pleasers. Teacher was a box office smash, earning $216.2 million dollars world-wide. This number is especially impressive when you consider that it only cost $20 million to make.
While the announcement states that the project is being developed specifically for Cameron Diaz (who starred in the original), she has yet to officially sign on. Diaz is in the midst of several different projects including The Other Woman with funny-woman Leslie Mann, and Agent: Century 21 with Benicio Del Toro and Sex Tape by Jake Kasdan.
Kasdan directed the first movie and will be returning to the sequel to take the lead. The script for the sequel was written by Justin Malen. Malen is most famous for making the Black List in 2011 for his screenplay Bastards.
“We love Justin’s take on the material,” Hannah Minghella, Columbia Pictures President of Production, stated in a press release. “It hits all the notes that made the first film such a breakthrough hit and also takes the characters in a new direction that is fresh and fun.”
Bad Teacher also starred Justin Timberlake and Jason Segal.
