The former American Idol and X Factor USA judge will return in the judges’ chair on a FOX show for the first time in two years.
The “Straight Up” singer and choreographer will join former Idol boss Nigel Lythgoe and his co-hort Mary Murphy at the So You Think You Can Dance Judges’ Desk for this week’s Top 18 episode.
So You Think You Can Dance’s resident head judge teased his followers this morning when this week’s guest judge had the initials P.A.
While many people thought it stood for the legendary singer-songwriter Paul Anka, Nigel took to Twitter to clear the air.
“Only kidding, it’s not the great singer/composer Paul Anka. It’s the girl I’ve waited ten seasons for @PaulaAbdul is joining us on #SYTYCD.” Lythgoe tweeted.
Since Lythgoe posted that tweet, the statement was retweeted over 107 times and favored 112 times.
When Abdul was unceremoniously removed from American Idol in 2009, Lythgoe invited her to be on the show to judge with him, Mary and former permanent judge Adam Shankman.
While she did not sign up to join the panel, she decided to air her own dance-based competition called Live to Dance, which only lasted for seven weeks.
Meanwhile, Abdul returned to the FOX Network to help former Idol judge Simon Cowell launch the USA version of X Factor. Unfortunately, after watching inaugural winner Melanie Amaro, Simon handed her walking papers and she was replaced with Britney Spears (and later Kelly Rowland).
However, Abdul did guest judge on the All-Star season of Dancing with the Stars, where she showcased great chemistry with Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba.
Meanwhile, Deadline has reported that the long running FOX dance competition show is down 27-percent this summer. Could Abdul’s appearance on the panel lead to a spike in the ratings?
