The International Awards Ceremony played host to JJ Abrams on November 25, 2013. The co-creator of several fan-favorite shows, including Lost and Alias, was awarded the Founders award. This award is a very high honor among the television community, celebrating those who have gone above and beyond in their line of work. The Founders Award gives thanks to those who cross cultural boundaries in their work.

Zachary Quinto, actor for the television show Heroes and most recent film series Star Trek, presented Abrams with the award. Accepting it, Abrams informed the audience: “I am not worthy.”

“Why would the Academy make this choice? Then it hit me. Back in 1993 my dad was in Cannes with the [future International Emmy CEO] Bruce Paisner.I was suspicious about this connection. They were at a lunch and Bruce’s chair got caught and he fell into the sea.”

Abrams joked that the only reason he had made it onto the stage was because his father had threatened Paisner. Abrams says that his father “desperately wanted to see his son up here tonight.” You’re worthy in your own right, Abrams, don’t you worry!

Abrams went on to thank his mother, who was also a big name in the television industry.

“I feel genuinely grateful [for this honor]. It’s a privilege to work in the television medium.”

Abrams joins the ranks of others who have won the Founders Award. Some of the awards most recent recipients include Simon Cowell, Stephen Spielberg, and Sir David Frost.

Can’t get enough of JJ Abrams? Fear not! He is currently working on the seventh installment of the Star Wars film saga.
