Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit Trailer Shows Off Chris Pine's Skills

Sigrid Bernhoerster

Staff Writer

During a sad week for fans of Tom Clancy’s work (the successful author of over two dozen spy thrillers died in Baltimore, MD on October 2 at the age of 66), a trailer for the latest cinematic adaptation of one of Clancy’s novels has premiered, and seems a little bittersweet in timing. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit stars Star Trek’s Chris Pine in the title role and functions a little like an origin story for the iconic character, something Pine will not be unfamiliar with. Through the trailer, the audience learns a few things about the character: he has a PhD, having previously served as an analyst, this looks to be his first case as an operative for the CIA, and that his wife, played by Keira Knightley, is unaware of whom he works for. Or is she? As shadowy boss (played by Kevin Costner) implies during a voiceover, the people closest to us (spooks) are the ones we “can trust the least.” Ironically, or perhaps foreshadowing a twist, the trailer shows Costner with a sniper rifle and his sights seem to be fixed firmly on Jack Ryan. Knightley’s character is seen in the company of the film’s villain, Viktor Cherevin, played by Sir Kenneth Branagh (who also directed), so perhaps there is reason to suspect her. Or maybe, Cherevin simply invited the Ryans to dinner. Who knows? We’ll find out all there is to know when the film is released this Christmas. An origin story for the Clancy/Jack Ryan film franchise seems appropriate, as it’s been 11 years since the last Jack Ryan film, 2002’s The Sum of All Fears, which starred Ben Affleck and Morgan Freeman, was in theatres. This brand-new trailer appears to tick all the action, explosions, global threat, conspiracy theory, and intrigue boxes one could wish for to reel in newcomers to the franchise and also lure the established fans back. The film opens on December 25 in North America and on December 26 in the UK.
