Jagged Little Pill To Become Broadway Musical

Catherine Meushaw

Fans of singer Alanis Morissette may be happy to know that her 1995 album, Jagged Little Pill, will become a Broadway musical. The Broadway musical is expected to open sometime next year, according to US WeeklyJagged Little Pill sold 33 million copies worldwide and is the “best-selling debut released by a female artist in the US." Morissette won a Grammy for the album and held the record for youngest person to receive the award (until it was broken by Taylor Swift in 2009). Music from Morissette's career will be featured in the show, in addition to original songs.  In a statement, Morissette said, "I look forward to taking the heart of Jagged Little Pill and expanding its story, fleshing it out into ever deeper layers of emotionality, specificity, humanity, power, physicality, spirit, and fabulism." Vivek J. Tiwary and Arvind Ethan David will produce the musical, along with orchestrations and arrangements by Tom Kitt. Morissette said "I look forward to collaborating with Vivek and Tom and our whole inspiring team to create something greater than the sum of our parts." Tiwary and David also expressed excitement about the show; Tiwary said "We need more Broadway musicals with a serious, relatable emotional core and strong female voices" while David said "bringing them to the Broadway stage feels like bringing them home" about Morissette's songs. Morissette is not the first to have an album become a musical. In 2010, the band Green Day had their album, American Idiot, turned into a stage musical by the same name. American Idiot won two Tony Awards during its run. Tom Kitt was also behind the orchestrations and arrangements for American Idiot. What do you think?
