Jennifer Hudson Battles Racism Within Her Own Home

Jennifer Hudson says that she still faces racism and prejudice even after an Oscar-winning career. Some even think her driver owns her home!

And by home we mean neighborhood. Jennifer Hudson has gone on record saying that she faces descrimination every day, despite being an American Idol alum, a Voice coach, and an Oscar winner!

“People also assume that my home belongs to my white driver, Charles,” Hudson, 36, told Cosmopolitan UK in an interview released last week.

Hudson recalls a particular moment when she was having something moved into her current residence. The movers looked to Charles for instructions even when Hudson gave them specific directions.

“When Charles came in, he asked him, ‘So where would you like these things?’ Charles said, ‘She said she wanted it right there. You’re talking to the wrong person.’”

Unfortunately, Hudson confessed this happens a lot.

“I defy all the odds being African-American, living in a wealthy neighborhood and being a working mom. It’s too many foreign things in one person! It’s so ignorant. Race is just one of them. I face them all.”

According to the Daily Star, Hudson also says she “has been directed to economy class on planes as cabin crews do not think she can afford business or first class flights.”

“There have been several situations where I get on a plane and the cabin crew assumes I’m meant to be in the back of the plane. That happens a lot. I’m like: ‘No, my seat is up there [in first class], thank you’.”

In the same interview with Cosmopolitan UK, Hudson encouraged her readers and fans to “fight back.” If the Harvey Weinstein scandal has shown us anything, she says, it is how much stronger we are when we speak up for ourselves and for each other.

I hate that these things have happened, but I’m glad that women are taking a stand for themselves. They should have the right to be able to do that. And no one’s power should be able to take over someone else’s. That’s not cool.”

Jennifer Hudson is well-known for playing Effie White in Dreamgirls and has also starred in The Secret Life of BeesSex and the City, Chi-Raq, and Hairspray Live!
