Last night Jim Parsons got his first taste as host of Saturday Night Live, and got an opportunity show off his other personas besides Sheldon Cooper.
In the opening monologue he addressed how easy it is for people to confuse him for the well-known character he portrays on the extremely popular The Big Bang Theory.
He also enlists the help of other former sitcoms characters and actors who have gone through the same experience.
In what turns into a musical number, Parsons is joined by “The Fonz” (actor Henry Winkler), Steve Urkel (Jaleel White), George Costanza, Jessica Fletcher and Bill Cosby as they sing “I’m not that guy.”
Over the course of the night, Parson’s sketches called for him to play Peter Pan interacting with a volatile ‘Tonkerbell’, a notorious serial murder known as ‘The Dance Floor Killer’, and a very uncomfortable actor auditioning for a role in 12 Years a Slave.
There were points throughout the evening where his nerves were clearly showing, but he did a nice job of calling for what the parts asked for.
Other notable moments from the show include a fake commercial for the “Bird Bible” which clearly drew some inspiration from ‘Twitch Plays Pokémon’ where one of the Pokémon was dubbed the name of “Bird Jesus.”
Also, this was the first episode without Seth Myers, and Colin Jost took over for him on Weekend Update. He did a very serviceable job of filling in and it’s evident that he and Cecily Strong could form a dynamic team going forward.
Saturday Night Live will be back again next weekend, as Lena Dunham hosts with musical guest The National.
